In 1715, Jean Martell founded the distillery at just 21 years of age, and it quickly grew in size and fame. Today it is one of the oldest, largest cognac houses. When Jean Martell died in 1753, his sons Jean and Frédéric took over the management. The company is still family-owned today and is now run by the ninth generation. The "Martell L'Or de Jean Martell" consists of over 400 brandies from the Grande Champagne and Borderies regions, some of which are over 100 years old.
